does anyone know what section 8 voucher is opposed to hud housing?

i recently recieved a letter from the housing commission that my landlord wont be preticipating in hud house after 27 years in the program now he is offering us a program called section 8 voucher.. does anyone know what this is ?i have a lease that says my rent is to be a cetain amount till june 2008 will this change it all of by lease does it have to remain what it is till june2008?

    Section 8 or as it is now known, the Housing Choice Voucher is a HUD program. It is administered by the local housing authority. It is a program that assists low income families by allowing them to pay only 30% of their income towards rent. The voucher pays the additional rent to the owner. The tenant signs his lease with the owner and the owner signs a contract with the housing authority for the housing help payment.
    The rental unit must meet certain housing quality standard sand the rent cannot exceed HUD approved amounts based on size, location and the participants income. The voucher belongs to the family and can be went from rental to rental.
