My husband and I live in Shelby County IA. I know the median family income here is ,700. We currently make ,200 a year. We're somewher in between Very low income (50% of the median) and Extremely low income (30% of the median). We're at about 34% of the median.
I've been told that if you receive section 8, for very low income, the tenant is only responsible for 30% of the rent. But, section 8 is for use in a rental that isn't HUD approved. Our apartment IS HUD approved. So – how does that work? I know they will base the rent on our income, but will be have to pay 30%? How do they do it?
Anyone else ever been in this situation?? Please help – I'm very confused.
I reckon HUD has different programs. I had a house in Banning California that I place on a Section 8. It was in a very nice area. I rented it for $575 (that was in the late 80's) and the tenant only had to pay $75.
My sister had a home several years before that, She got on some government program and they paid virtually all the rent for the tenant too. That house was in Monterey Park California in a very nice area and I believe the rent was at that time (the early 80's) was about $1400 and nearly all of it was paid through a program similar to HUD, but for refugees. The tenants only had to pay a few dollars.
Check with HUD to find out the exact requirements for your particular case and whether you are indeed qualified for HUD help and if that apartment you live in is on their program.
