   well it depends on model. If it is a craftsman openr, liftmaster, or anything made by chamberlain, they are interchangeable. The best way on those to make sure you have the right remote is 1. get the build date off back or side of operator. 2. look for a remote wire hanging down and right down the color. 3. If it has a small half inch by half inch button right down color of it and color of small LED light beside it. If it does not have button, but has a bunch of small switches, you can get a liftmaster remote model #61lm. All of that info will help get a remote.

   If it is a genie or overhead the remotes are usually interchangeable. There are a few other brands, that im not sure if you can get remote.

   One option you have is go to sears and get a reciever and remote. The reciever plugs into an outlet then you run bell wire (which should be included) to the wall button hook ups on the back of unit, then program per instructions. If you do not have something by chamberlain, and it is ancient it may not be in production and that will be the simplest way.
